I own an Acer Aspire 5101 which comes with an Atheros Wireless LAN device. Installing Fedora 7 didn't pick up the device on its own. So I had to struggle a bit since I am a lesser Linux freak.

The first thing you got to do is install madwifi packages. The following link will show you a quick way of doing it.

Now since you haven't got the Wireless LAN card installed, you may not have network available and hence no way to contact the internet. The above may not work for you, but then you need to get the madwifi packages someway or the other.

Once that is done, restart your system, log into Gnome, goto System > Administration > Network and see if you can see something like ath0 in the list of devices. If yes, I think you have got your device detected. Now that done, we want to make sure that connecting to the network is a breeze, hence you need to make sure that the NetworkManager service is installed. Goto System > Administration > Services and check whether NetworkManager is ticked or not. If it is not there in the list (it will be if you have installed with the most basic configuration) then you must use "yum install NetworkManager" on the root command line to install it.

Now once you have started the NetworkManager service from the Services manager (that we just used above) then you will see a NetworkManager icon pop into the task bar along side the system time.

When I had installed, I had connected using my LAN card. Since NetworkManager always gives priority to a wired connection, it will not bother to try starting the wireless network. You can get a lot of help on NetworkManager incase you need. Just google.

So I hope this small pointer article helps you get your Wireless LAN running on Fedora 7.

The moments I always lived for... the moments I never thought would ever leave me, well they have all died in vain... I have learnt lessons, emotional, spiritual, practical and many more. I have misjudged people. I never took the helpful advices from worthy friends, and sidelined them for an unworthy one.

But I am hoping I will move on, move somewhere new, start a brand new day, and probably start a brand new life. Hopefully things will come easy on me...
